Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging

Objectives

The overall objective of ELSI-Brazil is to investigate the dynamics of population aging in Brazil, its determinants, and the demand of this population for social care and health services. The study, therefore, provides key data to subsidy public policies toward healthy aging and improvements in health services for older adults. An additional objective of ELSI-Brazil is to allow international comparisons with other aging cohorts worldwide, such as the Health and Retirement family of aging studies.

The most important specific objectives of ELSI-Brazil are:

- To examine the physical and mental health conditions of Brazilians aged 50 and older and to assess the use of health services as well as the social, economic, and psychological well-being of this population and their contributions towards family and society;

- To investigate the medium- and long-term trends of the dimensions above mentioned;

- To examine the social determinants of the physical and mental health conditions of Brazilians aged 50 and older longitudinally, taking into account their socioeconomic conditions, use of health services, and social participation among others;

- To investigate factors associated with the use and effectiveness of health services in improving health conditions of older adults and their determinants.
